Preparation standards matter
From inspection to final surface approval
Confirm Surfaces, Colors and Coating System
Confirm the exterior surfaces, proposed colors and coating system in the written scope. Review applicable HOA or architectural color approvals before work begins.
Protect the Property
Identify landscaping, fixtures, windows and other areas that need protection. Confirm access and the protection plan before preparation starts.
Clean Exterior Surfaces
Select cleaning methods for the substrate and its condition. Remove surface contamination and allow the surface to meet the selected coating system’s application requirements.
Remove Loose or Failing Paint
Identify loose, peeling or failing coatings during inspection. Specify removal and sound-surface preparation where required before new materials are applied.
Address Eligible Stucco and Masonry Defects
Document cracks and eligible stucco or masonry defects. Specify appropriate repairs in the written scope; conditions needing other specialist work must be addressed before coating.
Treat Mildew and Biological Growth
Identify mildew or biological growth and specify treatment appropriate for the surface and coating system. Review any moisture conditions that could affect the prepared surface.
Seal Appropriate Gaps, Joints and Openings
Identify joints and gaps suitable for sealant and specify compatible materials where required. Preserve openings intended for drainage or ventilation.
Prime Required Surfaces
Determine which bare, repaired or existing surfaces require primer. Specify primers compatible with the substrate and selected coating system.
Mask, Review and Approve the Prepared Surface
Confirm masking, protection, repairs, primers, colors and suitable application conditions.
